How to Write a Brief Bio for Work

2/5/2020

Writing a bio for yourself can be difficult. The initial request may sound simple, but when you sit down to type, you might be paralyzed and unsure of where to start. How do you know if too much information is too much? How long should a bio be? Should “bachelor’s degree” be capitalized? (Hint: No, it shouldn’t be capitalized.)

To help aid you with creating a bio, here are a few tips.

How to Write a Brief Bio for Work

How Long is a Typical Bio?

Brief bios can be anywhere from 75 to 200 words, but of course, this length varies depending on the need. I’ve edited bios that are 350 words in length, and I’ve also edited bios that give only the gist of a team member’s qualifications, consisting of 100 words. Don’t worry about the number of words in your bio when you first start writing it. The length is an element that can be edited and revised once the first draft is written.

How to Write a Bio About Yourself in Third Person

Regarding bios for work, they are typically written in the third person, which means you won’t be using first-person pronouns: I. Instead, you’ll use she/he and your first name. In the first line of your bio, use your full name (first and last).

What Qualifications Should Be in a Bio?

Qualifications that pertain to your current type of work should be included (focus on the stronger ones if you have too many). You can mention others that aren’t work-related — but use them sparingly. If you have an academic degree, such as an associate, bachelor’s or master’s, don’t capitalize the degree unless it’s used in conjunction with a specific degree, for example, Bachelor of Science or Master of Fine Arts. Templates for Bios

I can’t remember where I pulled my questions from, but over the past couple of years, I’ve gathered specific questions from different sources regarding bios. I’ve narrowed these questions down to eight, and you can find them here. Once you finish answering them, you should have the “workings” of a brief bio ready.
I enjoy editing bios. It’s important to space out pronouns properly, remove unnecessary fluff, and make sure words are spelled and capitalized correctly. If you need help with creating, proofreading or editing your bio, contact me at YauponBerryPress@gmail.com. I charge $50 (my prices vary, especially if I’m running a promotion) per bio.
