Why Are Business Headshots Important?

Business headshots. What’s important about them, and why do you need one? Headshots are useful for a variety of reasons. Whether you own a business, have a website, or on social media (LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook), you need a picture of yourself. Not just that, but what if you’re asked to be a guest on a podcast, decide to write a book or start a blog, or simply want business cards with your face on them?

There are many reasons why having a headshot becomes necessary.

According to Merriam-Webster online, the definition of a headshot is short and sweet: a photograph of a person's head and face.

When someone asks you for a headshot, don’t resort to cropping yourself out of a random photo (no matter how much you like your outfit). Also, don’t take a selfie in front of a wall or door. A headshot says a lot about you and what you’re capable of — so leave it in the hands of someone who knows what they’re doing.

Above all, don’t wait until the need arises. Think ahead and schedule an appointment with a headshot photographer. This way, you’ll have a headshot readily available on your computer.

​Are there different types of headshots for business?

According to Meero, there are editorial portraits and professional portraits. Editorial portraits are taken at your place of business or use scenery that exudes your creative side. Professional portraits have a more subdued background and are less creative, but they’re also more popular (depending on your line of business).

For me, I chose an editorial portrait taken outside at a pond (behind George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum), with floral scenery in the background. I wanted my portrait to be fun, but also professional. The photographer gave me five digital poses to keep. 

What should you wear for a business headshot?

When in doubt, ask the photographer. When I scheduled a few headshots for colleagues, I asked the photographer what types of patterns and colors to stay away from, which was incredibly helpful, because I’m a guru of grammar, not of photography.

The price of a business headshot varies, and just because one photographer is cheaper than the other, it doesn’t mean they’re better. Make sure to peruse the photographer’s website for examples of their headshots. If you’re looking to save money, you might be able to find a photographer who’s breaking into the business and needs to build their portfolio.

Business headshots can start as low as $75 (for résumés).
